Government officials, MPs, former President Rawlings and his wife and past government officials converged on the Castle Gardens for the remembrance service.
Radio Ghana’s Presidential Correspondent reports that the service was a solemn one.
Also the families of the late President John Evans Atta Mills and Naadu observed a private one week celebration in a quiet and solemn mood at the Regimanuel Gray residence of the former first family in East Airport, Accra.
The leadership of Parliament led by the Deputy Majority leader Rashid Pelpuo and Minority leader Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu joined the family to observe the day.
Meanwhile, hundreds of People gathered at the Efua Sutherland children's park where the Greater Accra Regional branch of the NDC organised the week celebration of the life of the late President.
Many of the people gathered expressed their sadness at the death of the President.
In an Address, President Mahama described Late Prof Mills as a man of peace with a forgiving heart and as such Ghanaians should forgive those who criticised him harshly. Vengeance, he said, is of God and therefore people must resist the temptation to retaliate.
As part of activities to mark the one week departure of President John Evans Atta Mills, the Ridge Church of the Anglican Church of Ghana also held a Requiem Mass for his soul in Accra.
Delivering the homily, the Bishop of the Accra Diocese of the Anglican Church, Most Rev Justice Ofei Akrofi, asked Ghanaians to speak the truth at all times and avoid the politicization of the truth.
He said the greatest treasure Ghanaians can honour the late President is to live at peace and harmony with each other since those were the principles he stood for.
